This sweater is nearly twenty years old.
An essential classic wardrobe item for both men and women is the Navy cotton crewneck sweater. Whether plain or cable knit, with set-in sleeves, saddle shoulders, or raglan sleeves, it is timeless, ageless, seasonless and androgynous. The plain version of the sweater is a somewhat more difficult item for women than men to procure, and may require turning to a school uniform catalog, or the Men’s department.
For women, it provides a base for accessories.

In early Spring and then again in Fall I live in my cotton Navy crewneck sweater.
Ms. Aldrich,
Would you mind please settling something for me: I'm curious as to your affinity for Ralph Lauren clothing. Do you feel that it is quality for the relative price point (oxford shirts in particular) ? I must say that I'm more partial to J. Press as is your Father. Do you receive an incentive from PRL?
Thank you.
I have the exact same one as you're wearing in the first photo… and yes, mine is in its twenties as well :)
Hi Hilton,
Let me quote myself from the company ranking chart I posted a while back:
"Polo Ralph Lauren's high rating here surprises many men, but PRL remains one of the few sources of consistently classic Women's items, despite the need to wade through a slew of unattractive options." If only J. Press made clothes for women! And no, I do not receive anything from Ralph Lauren, although I am sure my husband would prefer that I did!
How do you feel about Ralph Lauren Oxford shirts for men compared to J. Press and others? I apologize for the what appears to be nitpicking nature of my inquiries. I'm just curious in regards to how you feel specifically about their men's clothing.
Thanks again.
My aunt wouldn't ever be without hers. I am not even sure where she finds them, or whether it's been the same one all these years:).
Hilton - As a fellow nitpicker, no worries! I think of the PRL men's core items as sturdy workhorses. The are consistent, well constructed, and wear well. I tend to buy their oxfords, khakis, boxers, seersuckers and rugbys en masse. They get hard use and I don't have to worry about them. The J. Press items I tend to use more for business and evenings (for my husband of course) and the Brooks Brothers items span both the every day and business casual.
Thanks again, madam.
I'm also fond of the RL Merino wool crewneck sweater, I find them a lighter weight and feel than the cotton. I tend to over heat when wearing a cotton sweater inside, the Merino wool feels more breathable to me! But it's all personal preference I suppose. I'll always have a navy crewneck in my wardrobe...a total classic!
Navy anything is always welcome here.

I've got a navy boatneck Ralph cotton sweater that I've had for 37 years. It just keeps getting better.
It's possible I died and went to heaven, that's how I feel upon visiting your fabulous blog at the suggestion of LPC at Privilege.
It is going on the blogroll, love your style.

Just found your blog today. I love navy. It looks great any time of year and I don't look good in black.
Hi Muffy,
I been having trouble finding the best navy cotton crewneck sweater for men. Can you help?
Thanks!
@Anonymous - It is such a simple item, yet not so easy to find. The ones I have liked the best are those I have found at the Ralph Lauren outlets - very straight forward. You could look at L.L. Bean, although I am not so keen on the neck. The only other one I can think of is the Lands' End Drifter Crewneck Sweater.
