The Black and White Photograph

An aesthetic that is important to me is the black and white photograph. They go with so many things and in so many places. Dramatic and stark, ideally they are also personal.

I follow a few guidelines:
  • Use plain, narrow black frames so as not to distract from the photograph;
  • Never mix them with color photographs;
  • Group them in two's or four's, with identical frames, common sizes and themes, and hung in rows or columns;
  • Keep them far away from direct sunlight.
Procuring good photographs can take a bit of work, however. I am lucky here in that I have archives of photographs taken and printed by my late father over five decades. Here are some he took, including of poet Robert Frost (the  cousin of my mother-in-law), the Port Clyde/Monhegan ferry landing, and in the last picture, photographer Edward Steichen.

Your father had such an eye for beauty! I especially loved the picture of Robert Frost.

Your father is extraordinarily gifted, an artist with the camera. I agree with you that black-and-white photography is the most sophisticated and demands of the photographer a deep understanding of light, which is the essence of visual art.

I don't hang photos on my own walls, however; mine are not art but just remembrances, black-and-white pictures of people, places, and horses now long gone, framed in silver and put on the large end tables.

Muffy,
Great black & white photograhs!
Wow! Robert Frost my dad's favorite poet. I recall seeing an old sepia tone picture of grandmother's brother in his dorm room at Harvard circa 1903,his roommate was Franklin D Roosevelt.

I've been thinking about this very thing for my living room. Your house is giving me all kinds of decorating ideas!

Muffy, these photographs are absolutely stunning. What a wonderful man to have had in your life. I can see his talent was passed onto his daughter.

I created a painting around the words of Robert Frost and especially enjoyed this image.

Thanks for stopping by and following along @ Finding My Way.

I completely agree with you about the black and white photographs. I have a selection of iconic images in Europe (Eiffel Tower, bicycles in Amsterdam, Trafalgar Square in London, etc) that I took during my travels in college. Every time I look at them I'm reminded of how much fun I had at each place. Plus, it's always nice when someone asks where I found them;)

I love your collection of black and white prints. Your dad was an artist in and outside the darkroom.

Beautiful collection of black and white photos. I'm wondering about the little girl in the collection. Is it possibly you?
