Reader Question: Irish Blackthorn Walking Stick

A Reader asked:

I was wondering where your walking stick came from?  It's the one in your posts from March 17th and September 8th 2010.  It's the perfect time for walking in the woods and a good walking stick always seems to come in handy, as I'm sure you know.  Thanks.

My response:

It is an Irish Blackthorn walking stick.  It can be a bit of work to find and you have to be careful.  There are plenty of knock-offs on the Internet, as the originals are time-consuming to make (they must season for two years) and there is only a several week window in winter for them to be harvested.

So I would stick to authentic Irish or British shops.  For example, I saw some in a store in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia called The Irish Walk. I almost bought a couple the last time I was there that were a bit thinner than mine.  I will probably get them next time.  They also ship, but then you would certainly miss the periodic bagpipe playing out in front.

Irish Blackthorn on the right.
