Reader Question: What about Tretorns?

A reader asked:

Any thoughts on Tretorns? They've been trying to make a comeback, and I eagerly bought some a couple of years ago, but they don't seem to be catching on with anyone else. Many people who wore them in the 70s and 80s say that even though they look the same, the new ones are not as comfortable. Even worse, when I sprained my foot playing tennis last year, my doctor told me Tretorns were an absolute no-no on the court. Ironic, considering that was the brand's original purpose!

My response:

I used to wear Tretorns way back when, and thought they were great. When I tried some on a few years back, they added visually about two sizes to my feet, which I can ill afford! I am not surprised you were advised not to wear them, as tennis shoes these days have a lot of lateral support. But the only place that I can remember seeing them was on the Lands End Canvas site (for women) and they were on a model for LL Bean Signature in a pre-release photo last year. I think of them more as a shoe for casual wear, not unlike a Bean Camp Moc or Blucher.

They are definitely trying to make a comeback. Take a look at their site to see their approach here: http://www.tretorn.com.

I have a pair that I bought last summer. I love them. There is no support in them though. I was told by a podiatrist that they were probably one of the last things I should wear because of the lack of support. I think that mine are comfortable (up to a point). I have been know to put an arch support in mine though when I am wearing them.

I wore mine to the "True Prep" signing in McLean, VA last week and Lisa assured me they're all the rage in NYC. Originally I bought the white on white so they would go with everything, but I really should get the blue stripe, for old times' sake.

I must admit, though, I'm a little concerned about their current marketing campaign. I'm all for emphasizing the environment and the outdoors, but between them and some of the LL Bean catalogs I've seen recently, the moose imagery is wearing thin...it's giving me Abercrombie nightmares.

This is what I miss when I stay out of the city for the summer! I think the white on white and the blue stripe are equally great. Tretorn should trek up to Baxter State Park and get a real moose in some of those pictures!

I am STILL recovering from a broken foot. I got tired of the big Nikes, so I went to Sears and bought 2 pairs of Tretorns, one white on white and the other navy on white, in a size larger than I wear. I even ordered a pair of the pink on white from the NYC store. I use a SuperFeet arch support. They have been great for the summer. They are a lot better than the Nikes that are 2 1/2 sizes larger than what I normally wear.

These are indeed the old favorites.

The Tretorn site is a bit overwhelming with the vast array or items.

However, FWIW, my guess is that the Nylite model is what readers of this blog are looking for.

$49.50, no shipping charge, and blue stripe in stock at Zappo's.

Unsolicited trivia:

If Saturday seems like a chamois shirt, Bills' cord, Tretorn kind of a day, you might consider:

>Original Prep; Husky Wool Crew socks, from Wigwam. Available at net sources like; The Sock Company. (You may remember these white socks as the ones that turn slightly yellow, after a number of washings.)

>Even if your feet are perfect, the "Powerstep" insert, from a net source like Zappo's. Infinitely better insert than ones from the pharmacy. the knock on the Nylites is that there is no padding inside. This should solve that problem.

Wharf Rat,

Your knowing comments are a big reason why I will be posting more of the questions I receive.

For very casual wear (not hiking, etc.) I have worn Keds since the dawn of time. I find them to be versatile and comfortable. I owned a pair of Tretorns in the 80's during high school, but they were my only pair. --Holly in PA
