Reader Question: What do you use for an overnight bag?

Dear Muffy,

What do you use for overnight luggage for personal trips, such as to a friend's house?  I find suitcases are too big and clunky. Thanks!

That's a good question.  The vast majority of my overnights are to the city, and for these quick trips I almost always reach for one of my Vera Bradley Miller Bags.  I like that they are lightweight, and easy to put in the train overhead racks.

And since when the weather is nice I often walk uptown from the train station, I prefer long handles so I can throw it over my shoulder. I usually also take one of their large backpack for toiletries.  My husband prefers the L.L. Bean extra-large Boat and Tote with the zip-top.

How great that you commute by train. I presume you're riding the Northeast Corridor?

Vera bags are beautiful and I always notice a woman who carries one. But I think Mr. Muffy is wise to stick with the Boat and Tote!

In the South it is impossible to check into a hotel without see Vera Bradley everywhere on the bellman carts.

Muffy,

You and your husband have impeccable taste. But what do you use for a long weekend away?

Thanks,

Ryan

Hi Ryan - Given we have chickens and a dog that really likes to be home, there aren't so many long weekends away right now! But my husband does a fair amount of business travel and he uses the Orvis Battenkill luggage. But it will soon need to be replaced and for that we will go to J.W. Hulme. (Brought to my attention by Maxminimus.)

I do the same, Muffy -- I travel with a smallish piece of soft-sided canvas luggage (in navy blue) that fits neatly on the overhead racks on the train. It's one that I can carry comfortably walking uptown from Penn Station, although lacking a Yale connection, not to the Yale Club. But there are plenty of other clubs nearby.

I use the appropriate size piece of my Vera Bradley Classic Black. I have all different sizes. It is always refreshing to know that others use their Vera Bradley.

I never thought to use a VB Miller bag as an overnight bag--thanks for the suggestion. I use one of my VB duffels.

Carole - The size of the Miller Bag falls in between the Small and Large Duffels. I find the Small too small, and the Large too cumbersome for walking any distance.

I use my vintage brown and dark olive green trim LL Bean canvas with leather handle duffles and matching garment bag that I got back in the early 70's by parents after I graduated from college. They've worn like iron!

I also carry the Miller bag. It's so convenient, and is just the perfect size for 2-3 days away. I like the idea of using the backpack for toiletries, as I usually use the large cosmetic bag and it sometimes is a little cramped.

I'm definitely paying a visit to my favorite Vera Bradley store for my upcoming trip. One can never have too many Vera Bradley bags.

I love the commuting by train, my bag of choice however is the Boat&Tote

Reggie, lik your husband, almost always uses an LL Bean Boat and Tote bag for such excursions. When I want to use a bag with more tone and formality, I will use a black leather duffel that I bought in a moment of abject extravagance a number of years ago at T. Anthony on Park Avenue. It is a thing of beauty, indeed.

We also use the extra large zippered LL Bean tote bag and for longer trips we have enormous LL Bean duffles, but I'm thinking it would be nice to have something a little more stylish for longer trips.

A trio of early generation Ghurka bags in the original khaki canvas and tan leather motif - an Express #2, a Racqueteer #11 and a single suit garment bag (can never remember neither its proper name or model number.)

All have served my well since our wedding in 1980 and numerous trips around the world for the first couple of years. Since then have seen exclusive use for auto/train travel. Nicely aged and somewhat battered, all three pieces are loyal friends. Need to have the zipper replaced on the Express and the handles restitched on the Raqueteer.

old - The Ghurka bags are some of my all time favorites. I only have two left, and they are heavily worn. I'm trying to decide how worn is too worn. They are perfect for autos and trains. (I have a hard time imaging airplane travel these days without a rollerboard or other bags with wheels.)
