Any good holiday gift ideas?

I am passing on this request from a reader. Please post any ideas!

Dear Muffy,

I am just gearing up to buy some holiday gifts. Is there any way you could ask your readers what presents they are looking forward to giving or getting this year that fall into the pervue of your blog?

Thank you! (Love The Daily Prep!)

Dear reader,

I am under the impression that one can never have too many scarves (even where I live in the Mid-Atlantic!). That being said, this season, I am looking forward to receiving an L.L. Bean Irish Lambswool scarf. Bean has two different item numbers to differentiate between men's and women's colors, but the product otherwise seems to be the same. Also, some colors from each are quite unisex (like the women's Dress Stewart and many of the men's colors).

Here is the link for men's:

A L.L. Bean Boat and Tote Bag makes a lovely gift. Especially when monogrammed and filled with the recipient's favorite snacks, and a book, DVD or music. The totes come in an assortment of colors and sizes, and they are gender neutral.

Here is a recommendation that we got from Mrs A, earlier:

The variety of options is incredible. You can design one that exactly fits the interest of the one you are giving the gift to; golfer, sailor, etc.

Colors also offer an infinite variety of options.

I have never given one of these that wasn't really appreciated, and used every day to do away with the problem of lost keys. They love it ! Usually tell you much later that they think of you when always being able to locate their keys.

Not evident from photo, but hardware is very heavy duty, easy to clip onto a belt loop, and is the equivalent of hardware on sail boats. can't possible wear out.

Here's some items on my wish list some readers may want to consider:

1. The L.L. Bean 10'' Maine Hunting Shoe; $169. Obviously, a prep staple I need in my closest and on my feet ASAP. And I'm embarrassed I don't already own these. This particular pair is lined with Gore-Tex/Thinsulate, so my feet stay toasty without the bulk compared with the shearling-lined Bean boot. There's even some subtle differences between the hunting shoe and Bean boot (obviously I'm in favor of the hunting shoe) ... HS rubber is a bit duller than BB's, HS stitching is dark brown compared with BB's white stiching, and HS leather is a bit softer. http://www.llbean.com/llb/shop/33174?feat=506711-GN3

2. Dubarry Galway Tall boot; $439 or Dublin RCS Tall Boot; $179. Already an owner of several riding boots and equestrian-style boots, my latest lust is available through several tack store websites, including manhattansaddlery.com. Last month at the World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Ky., I saw at least 50 20-something girls and their mothers (over the course of two days) wearing these boots. Obviously, I'm not trying to jump on the band wagon or anything, but ... This boot is functional when it comes to keeping your feet and calves warm in the snow, riding in the covered arena when your half chaps aren't cutting it, mucking stalls or fetching the ponies from the pasture. I want! https://www.manhattansaddlery.com/product_info.php?products_id=604

3. Sea Bag Red Claw Tote; $120.
While I'm not sure of Muffy's opinion on Sea Bags, I sure know mine! In June, I visited the company's factory in Old Port. I didn't have $120 at the time to spend on a bag, so I purchased an anchor wristlet for $22. Now, I'm ready for the investment.

4. Renewed subscription to Garden & Gun magazine; $19.97. (I'll admit I'm far from the target reader. I'm 24, a female journalist, not exactly living in the South, and fresh out of school with student loans.) G&G – a reading requirement – is not just for the southern prep. The mag's rich story-telling, photography and attention to detail on hunting, gardening, style, food and cultural identity makes you wonder why the magazine is still struggling financially.

5. Second generation Apple iPad; price TBD. I hesitate to ask for this product for Christmas. But is it functional? Yes. Practical? Yes. As part as my graduate capstone project, we're creating a digital magazine for the iPad. So, during the last three months, all I hear is iPad this and iPad that. In less than two years, all of our favorite magazines will be best viewed and enjoyed on the iPad. Bonus: Let's save some trees and save the hassle of traveling with heavy laptops.

What I find interesting is how appealing every gift idea mentioned here sounds. I now plan to give several of these.

One idea, a thorough remastering of a classic, which has gotten great reviews: The Sound of Music (45th Anniversary Edition) Blu-ray

Consider Vermont Originals for hats. See entry here.

Hi all!
I would like to recommend http://www.countryattire.com They offer free worldwide shipping and stock a good sortiment of Johnstons Luxury Cashmere products. Scarves and so on. I vouch for them from good personal experience.

Best regards Gustaf

One reader suggested Cellar Leather.

Hey guys, don't even think about it. You simply have to get one or more of the hats that Mrs A recommended from Vermont Originals!

This ranks right up there with the key thingy that we learned about through TDP.

Get one or more of the design it yourself numbers.

Very heavy knitting. Ear and head warmer stuff on the inside.

Use your imagination with color, and copy on the front. Under $50.

Guarantee you will be pleased. Really a quality item.
If you do your own, you will never see another one like it.
