A Trip to the City

I like being backstage more than in the audience. So this weekends' trip to the city accomplished that twice. First, we were able to see the behind the scenes mechanics of our friends' show. And second, we could watch the city gear up for the holidays.

We started the afternoon with an outdoor performance in Bryant Park, an easy walk from Grand Central.

Here, the lights were being put up on The Tree. We bypassed J. Crew next door.

I used my over-sized quilted canvas backpack to accommodate my gear.

Knowing we would be outside a good deal (including walking the dog in the park), I opted for my insulated waxed cotton.

He took us downtown to the Greenwich Village theater.

Even while singing after the show, The Flying Karamazov Brothers were in perpetual motion.

It is interesting to see a performance from all perspectives.

One of my favorite stores in the city.

Checking out Barbours' tattersalls.

And finally, popping into the Algonquin.

I have never been to the Algonquin. What about it do you like?

@Sam - mostly the cat!

I enjoy my annual stay at the Agonquin; I stay there mostly for the history, and to revel in the delight of people watching in the lobby. Matilda the cat and Dave and Sean the bellmen are a bonus. The restaurant food is poor and I was disappointed to find that the coffee they serve is now Starbucks. Guests should most definitely dine out.

Looks like a god time was had by all. You look wonderful as always, the pearls are a perfect touch.

Years and forever ago I stayed at the Algonquin during a trip to a university honor's conference. Sadly, I didn't know then that I should have paid closer attention. Despite having been there, I feel I missed an opportunity.

The New York Orvis store must be wonderful. Where do you come down in the Barbour Beaufort v. Classic Beaufort debate?

Looks like your NYC jaunt was a fun one. I love being there...usually once per month. And I love going back home.

I'll second James's comment.

@Sophie - Sounds like a lovely tradition, and good advice.

@James - Thank you. And New York never disappoints.

@Marsha - Sounds like you need another trip. I don't know of anything worth seeing that is worth seeing only once.

@Bob - I love Orvis, although I do miss their old location, which was much smaller and intimate. And honestly, I like both waxes. I just today received my new Bedale and because I wanted Navy, I had no choice but to get the Thornproof wax. How about you?

@ADG - You have both a similar schedule to ours as well as a similar tolerance.

@John - I'm with you. No matter what James says, I will second it. You are very kind.

I've never had a Barbour jacket and am preparing to take the plunge.

@Bob - You may find this Ask Andy useful background information. They are discussing both the Beaufort vs. Bedale as well as the two waxes.

Personally, I prefer the wax rather than the sylkoil. The latter seems lighter, smells less and is not as hard-wearing. A Barbour, to my mind at least, is not a Barbour unless it is waxed. And yes, thay may call the other classic and that is indeed what they may have used back in the day but...well, there we are.

Off topic, with apologies--
wishing you and Mr. Muffy Aldrich and son a wonderful Thanksgiving.

@Sam - I agree with you that the Thornproof wax is tougher, and I also like the smell. I know some who prefer the Sylkoil for when they are out shooting, as it is quieter. Here is a link on the topic.

@Barbara - I love off-topic! Thank you so much. We wish you a happy Thanksgiving as well. Are you cooking? (I know I am.)

My vote is for the classic Barbour waxed Beaufort, the Bedale orginally was designed as a riding jacket shorter in length.
