Preppy Items that are Simple, Satisfying, and Cheap

There is a certain satisfaction to items that are:
  • Low-maintenance;
  • Reasonably priced; and
  • Simple in design.

Here are some examples.
  • The sweater is from Lands’ End School Uniforms. (This is often the only way to get the preferable shade of Navy from Lands’ End - Classic Navy. Their True Navy too often looks like black.) It is still reasonable full priced at $34.50. But because of one of their many discount offering emails, I paid  $25.90 with free shipping
  • The polo shirt came from a Ralph Lauren outlet. After combining it with a store wide sale and a coupon I received in the mail, I paid $23.95 for it.
  • The khakis are also from Lands’ End.  And despite the shockingly unflattering waist (which I cover), the legs are straight and cut thinner through the thighs than most and I can choose my inseam as well as get them cuffed at no extra charge. The sale price was $22.99.
  • The tote is from  L.L. Bean's, their "Boat and Tote" bag, here in Small, Open-Top with Short Handles, which retails for $17.95, with free monogramming and shipping.  (Yankee-Whisky-Papa takes issue with L.L. Bean's brand name here.)
  • My Nantucket Knotworks rope bracelet was $6.99 and my hair elastic was about fifteen cents.

I have those Lands End cardigan in many colors. I may have to check out the school uniform section for the navy. I don't like the regular navy that they have. I can wear an XL in the RL boys polos. Sometimes I can get them for $15 or $16. What is the problem with the Lands End khaki waist? Why I ask, I have to have the ones with a higher waist. I would love to have a pair with cuffs.

@LPC - :)

@Matthew C. - Thank you.

@Tammy B - I often turn to the uniform section as the items tend to be more simple in design (although they are now adding ruffles to some items) and this cardigan is %100 cotton. They add stretch to the regular ones, which I never like as much. The waist on the pants is just a bad combination of being too low and too wide.

Thanks for the suggestion about the uniform cardigans. I like the red and the maize. It's hard to find regular red and a yellow that doesn't scream.

Ralph Lauren outlets are awesome. I don't get to visit them very often, but I've found some very nice polos there at bargain-basement prices--and often in colors that you can't get online.

Great post. Now if we could just get someone, anyone, to make khakis to our specs. :-) XOXO

I got tons of emails about it, and these are my favorite (non-branded) family terms for the bags from various readers and commenters, because they are revealing about their uses:

-Ice Bucket
-Bosun's Bucket
-Canvas clutch
-Picnic Bag
-Firewood bag
-Sandy bag
-Dog bag
-Practice bag
-Bottles bag
-Hamper
-Art bag
-Stadium bag
-Keg bag

It seems that each family should come up with its own term... let's reverse brand the thing.

We have literally dozens of the "boat and totes: One is called "camp gear" another is a "work bag" and some are "travel bags:. Whatever name you want to use, they are great.

Just found your blog and love it. Love it so much that I just ordered the pink LL Bean small tote you featured in your pic. I ordered the pink berry color. Hope that's the same pink as yours. Love it!

@living well - Thanks for commenting!

@John - I agree and as fewer small shops carry RL items, the outlets become the default venue.

@Preppy 101 - So true! Anyone.

@James - Per usual, the perfect gentleman.

@Yankee-Whisky-Papa - This is a great list - thanks for posting it! Although I have no great love of the name Boat and Tote, I use it on the blog to be specific, for readers who wish to purchase them. (Given how often I show things that are no longer available, it is nice to be able to point people somewhere!) Having said that, my grandfather called them ice bags and in our house, we call them sail bags.

@mary anne - They are great and I love the fact that they are made in Maine. We too have dozens.

@Sweet Southern Prep - Thank you and yes indeed it is the Pink Berry. I think it is their best pink yet. I have just ordered another one, back-ordered to mid-June. Thanks for visiting!

Muffy - I wonder if you might do a post on women's penny loafers. I had a Bass pair back in the 80s and the worm is turning again. However the Bass shoes I've purchased more recently ( different styles) are lacking in quality. I want a leather lining but not a designer price.
