For Men, The Most Essential Item. Here are some of our examples.
Dear Muffy,
I have to go to a wedding in August on Martha’s Vineyard and wanted your thoughts on what I should wear. I see in your post Would it Work for a Summer Wedding or Gathering? that a blazer is a good choice. I do have an older navy blazer, but it doesn't seem formal enough. Should I get a new one, or just wear a suit? If I get a new blazer, where should I get it? What do you think?
If your navy blazer is well made and classically styled (and still in good condition), it sounds perfect. Blazers fit in to so many summer celebrations seamlessly.
They work for the young. Here are our groomsmen the morning of our wedding.
They work for the old. Here is my father on the left and my Uncle Bill on the right.
And it was fun to see Ralph Lauren wear one to his daughter’s graduation
If you want it to be more personalized, such as for the wedding party itself, you can optionally add a few extra details.
My husband had Ralph from J. Press’ New Haven store sew his school buttons on one of his blazers. |
If you do not believe your blazer is up to snuff, I would suggest getting a new one from J. Press, Brooks Brothers, or O'Connell's. It will be an item that you will have all of your life.
After you have a blazer or two (or five), you may want to add other items to your summer festivities wardrobe.
Consider a khaki suit:
Or a pincord jacket:
Good luck, and have a great time.

I like your father's shirt. Very sharp.
Is the young man on the left in the photo of your groomsmen your husband's college roommate and the captain featured in your recent sailing posts?
@F&L - Thank you!
@Barbara - You're good!
Blazers: Marks & Spencer in London and throughout the UK, always have a good range. BTW, M&S briefly owned Brooks in 1980s, don't think M&S realized what they had!
Best wishes

Muffy,
Do you prefer the look of a sack or darted blazer?
Good advice Muffy, you just can't go wrong with J Press.
@Anonymous - I remember a BB salesman informing us of this purchase just when it was still fresh. Seems like a long time ago now!
@Anonymous - 3 button J. Press sack.
@Preppy Times - We really don't go anywhere else.
Great post! I love a navy blazer on a young/old/in-between man ;-). xoxo
Love it, Muffy! Thanks so much for these informative posts. Would you please post a similar one for women? Just last week I bought a BB navy blazer, considering it an investment piece, now I'm befuddled as to what would look best with it, as well as where to wear it. Thanks!
Deborah
One thing you can do is go to your local high end men's store and talk to them about their brands, how they fit, get recommendations. If you like it and can afford it, buy it there- it's local. However, when I was in college I would then take their advice to a place like sierra trading post where you can often find similar items for a lot cheaper.
A blue blazer is a blue blazer- you get what you pay for and any brand from Jack Victor to J Press to Brooks Brothers will be comparable as long as it fits you.
My husband has a navy Ralph Lauren blazer and it is his go-to for so many occasions.
I recently purchased Mount Holyoke College Blazer buttons as a gift for my wife - she looks very stylish in her blazer with those buttons. For men, aside from school / college buttons, brass buttons with Civil War designs (from both sides) are very stylish.
What about navy blazers for women...
Hi All
I know this is an older post, but I've kept it in mind and my navy blazer life is about to begin on a cruise in January. I'm wondering if it will do to pair one with grey flannel trousers - it looks like Seymour St John wear this combination in thiose b&w photos in that recent post. I've narrowed my search down to an O'Connell's own navy blazer, an Orvis hopsack navy blazer and a Bonobos' 'The Alma Mater' . Bonobos might tend toward being less classically sytled, but it does look like nice hopsack fabric. All three have brass (coloured) buttons. J Press is out of my price range and I returned the LL Bean travel blazer for being too boxy. I would welcome any advice anybody has.
Thanks
Tim
