Hollyhocks

A reader, HHH, sent this thought and these pictures from her garden...

"If one were to categorize flowers as one does people, Hollyhocks would surely fall into the category of preppy. After all, it loves cottages on Nantucket (as it does all cottage gardens in the cooler regions of New England). It is tall and proud, sturdy and self-assured, brightly colored in clean pastels reminiscent of sorbet, but never loud like a gladiola."

One does adore hollyhocks. They are such a lovely old-fashioned plant, with such attractive cottagey flowers. They are a great favorite of mine. Reggie

Bringing back happy memories of my childhood again. This put a smile on my face. Kudos HHH and Ms. Muffy.

Hmmmmm...I never thought of flowes as being preppy, but that is definitely something to think about.
What about daisies...would they be considered preppy? Daisies and tulips are my favorites.
Not having grown up on the East Coast, I have missed out on all the beauty it has to offer.
Do Hollyhocks have any fragrance to them? They're beautiful and just the right shade of pink. Now do they come in green also? Just joking, not everything that is pink and green is preppy.

Susan R: Yes, they come in a variety of lovely colors. The colors are all clear, clean sorbet shades, including yellow, raspberry red, pink and white. They do not have a fragrance. I do agree that daisies and tulips are right at the top of the list of favorite flowers as well. Daisies remind me of all the Daisy Chain pictures from Vassar College graduations.

I also love rose rugosa, or the beach rose which is found all over the coast of Maine. The pink has the perfect prep pink.

@Anonymous - I so agree with you about the beach roses!

I stumbled upon your great blog in the wee hours tonight, and I had to comment about Round Pond! One of our favorite places in the world, where we have been going to 30 years, each first week of August. Thanks for sharing about the 4th-next year will have to go!

@Anonymous - The more you know Round Pond, the more it changes on that one day - a transformation. Have a wonderful week. Perhaps you'll get an ice cream cone from Sarah or give BJ's Goldens a pet at King Ro? And don't forget Smokey! What fun - another Muffy.
