Mike Ashford's Classic Eulogy 'Sailing with Cronkite'

After a recent conversation with Annapolis' Mr. Ashford (owner of the legendary McGarvey's), at the suggestion of one of his friends, I tracked down his eulogy of Walter Cronkite, on their years of sailing together.

It resonated so completely that I wanted to share it.

Wow! Listening to that made my whole day.

That put a tear in my eye...so beautiful. How painful to lose someone that you're so close to.

A lovely tribute. Cronkite was almost certainly one of the greatest Americans in living memory. I have felt his absence quite keenly.

Muffy,
Great tribute to Mr. Cronkite! Ages ago my parents bought me a book on Cronkite's sailing adventures! a wonderful collaborative watercolor essay, don't remember the artist name, but beautiful paintings illustrating Cronkite's ports of call.
McGarvey's was one of my Sunday brunch hangouts for years.

This just makes me want to cry. All of the fun times I had at McGarvey's with Mike & Carole... and we would see Mr. Cronkite there and saililng on his boat, Wintje (?). They were all big supporters of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation where I worked and were always so gracious and generous with their support.
