No matter how many variables one constrains, each trip out onto the water is different and wonderful in its own way. The permutations of company, conditions, locations, and other boats and people are infinite, and each adds layers of meaning to what I think of as a "classic" lifestyle.
Now, as summer enters its final act, I find myself deliberately savoring so many details in preparation to unpack them in the dead of winter. Here are some images (including of J-class boats, a Chris-Craft, and American Eagle) from our last time out, that I know I will be summoning in January.
| We met half-way for a day with our friends, organic farmers Kingsley (a veteran racer), Kelly, and their three children. |
| He too has ancestors who sailed this very body of water in the 1600s. |

I wish I had been able to get some sailing in this summer, Muffy. Unfortunately, I've just been too busy with taking a full semester of graduate courses, and am only now able to have some time off.
I did get a chance to sail Sydney Harbour at Christmas/New Year's so that was really nice to do. I went out on a J24.
One of the things I've noticed is that boat shoes are really to the point of popular saturation and they're all over anyone from about 15 to 25, and yet you can always tell who's actually used them from the saltwater discolorations and even (in my case) some blood stains from some lovely slips on deck. Boat shoes are comfortable and should be wearable pretty much anywhere casual, comfortable clothing is required, but they ought to see an actual deck once in a while...
Love the pictures. I'm jealous!
So familiar, and so wonderful. How to pass this experience, and the resultant values on?
Dear Muffy,
Do you know the name of that beautiful blue yawl in your photo? It was anchored right off our place up the Bay in Portsmouth yesterday morning--it must have sailed down to Newport later on. What an elegant craft! Yesterday was a terrific day to be out on the water.
@Kionon - Sydney Harbour sounds incredible! Now I'm jealous.
@LPC - How to indeed!
@Michael - I believe it is Nirvana, an old Hinckley belonging to David Ray. Beautiful!
Those are some beautiful boats. Very lovely pictures, thank you for sharing.
Muffy, it was, you can see my pictures here:

Enjoy!
Love that Cris Craft!!
What a beautiful family you've featured in various installments of TDP - I found their blog due to your postings. The dinners at the farm looked so inviting and these photos of a day on the water almost make me think I was there - really wonderful. I especially love the photo of the little girl jumping into the water with canine encouragement - whose pup?
Great shots! Love the Trumpy!
Wow an old america's cup 12 meter! where is Dennis Connor when you need him :-)
Dennis? Try Ted Turner.
David Cooper
AE is in the ACC charter fleet in Newport. You don't need Dennis or Ted, you can charter any of them.
You have a beautiful boat! I'm a sailer myself, and live for the beautiful days on the water. Your shots are great.
S. 340? Last time I saw one of these was in Amsterdam. I will be returning to the Netherlands during my gap between summer and Fall classes. Looking forward to getting out on the water with friends.
@Raulston - Europe is indeed the place to see them - very few in the U.S.. Have a great time! Pictures?
