Finally a Good Kelly Green from Patagonia

Patagonia's Men's Retro-X Cardigan
I have long been a fan of Patagonia, vastly preferring it to The North Face, which I don't like at all. Patagonia has retained its soul.  My greatest compliment of Patagonia as a company is that I will buy their clothes for my family, even if the colors are a little off.  This has been necessary over the years as their colors and combinations (such as the use of black here) have often been far from ideal.

So it is satisfying for me to finally see a great Green.  And they even paired it with Navy Blue.
There are two caveats, however.  First, they do use a subtle trim ribbon that is hardly noticable, but not the best shade of green as it somewhat clashes.  Second, this color combination is only available in the Men's Retro-X Cardigan.  The cut is a bit bulkier.  But with our first frost, I will be bulking up anyway with sweaters.

Is that the item that they call the Men's Classic Retro-X Jacket? You've definitely chosen the most attractive of the colors that it comes in. I might get the Prussian Blue if I were to buy it myself, not so attractive a color as that green, but the blue might be more compatible with the other items in my somewhat limited winter wardrobe. The green looks slightly better in your photos than in the images at the patagonia and altrec sites.

Speaking of Patagonia "color combinations," take a lookt at this "classic navy" Synchilla, here.

(Not sure if I hyperlinked that right)

Well said. I agree with you about Patagonia. I've been wearing them since the 1980s.

But you do realise, don't you, that Patagonia are headquartered on the West Coast?! O the horror! ;)

There's a good feature and photo spread on Patagonia in the current Bloomberg Businessweek magazine.

Muffy,

What is that your holding in your hands in the last photo? I picked one of those up at a yard sale a couple of years ago for $2 or $3, but have no idea what it is or what it's used for.

Cheers,

John

I love the men's Simple Synchilla jacket. I rarely ever wear men's clothing because I really believe there is an art to wearing men's clothing, if you are a woman, and I just look frumpy in men's clothing. I'd be willing to give the Synchilla jacket a try though.
Patagonia is a traditional name to be sure and I think their reputation for consistently providing quality goes without saying. They make great outdoor gear.

I, too, am impressed that you have what I call a shooting stick.

Photography seems a family tradition. I love the composition in the first photo--the dramatic contrast of bright green against weathered gray, with the frame extended to include the patch of blue sky to balance and soften the green.

I'll eventually look into getting one of these myself.

I have actually never owned anything from the north face.

Funny how things come full circle.... I had a jacket in the early 80's from a Co. called Chuck Roast , had the patch pocket like the one your wearing and the collar trim as well mine was red with navy trim. It even had elbow patches too! all the trim was a heavy nylon sail cloth , cool jacket.

Hmmm... this is one to consider. A couple years ago I bought the North Face Denali fleece jacket, in black. It was a poor color choice since black looks terrible on me. The bottom half of the jacket is also sheathed in nylon, giving the whole thing a stiff feel. I ended up giving it away. This Patagonia jacket is at a similar price point but more attractive. The green ribbon trim in contrasting green is a bit unfortunate, though. Still, the main green shade is nice. I recently found a Synchilla jacket I bought 15 years ago or so, and the shade is such that it's really unwearable now... a very '90s shade of green.

I *love* that jacket! It looks so cozy. I"m with you on NorthFace. The color is striking against the wood.

I wish North Face would make a Kelly green or even a navy; as I usually prefer their cuts. The Patagonia does look lovely, though, perhaps I'll look into their's.

I see lots of black jackets from
patagonia. I have no idea either what color of pants I should match with black.

i've been on the prairie now for years ... totally land locked and trying desperately to 'bloom where i'm planted.' we have just endured the most brutal summer in our history. months of triple digits.
i'm a 66 yr old widow now and it's time for change. i hope in a year or two to be able to come back home.
til then i will vicariously live the new england life through your magnificent blog!

Muffy, you look my size... did you get this in small or extra small? I love the color.

I'm a Floridian just back from visiting family Connecticut. I happened to mention that I needed a light rain jacket, so we stopped at the REI in West Hartford. The only thing I could find that had all the features I wanted was a North Face boy's extra large in kelly green (I usually wear a petite medium). I hope I don't regret my purchase, as I am a slave to what I like to call "Muffy-Approved Fashion". I don't recall why you don't like North Face...could you refresh my memory please?

@Anonymous 12:00 - Blue Train is right. It is an old shooting stick that we got from Orvis at least twenty years ago.

@Anonymous 10:11 - As I am not a fan of the color black (except for evenings in a very large city), I am probably not the one to answer this; however I suspect many would say khaki goes well with black.

@Anonymous 9:34 - It is a Men's Small. A little generous, but perfect for over sweaters.

@Anonymous 7:41 - I have never liked the look and feel of products from The North Face. Part of it is that horrible logo, and it always gives me that "pseudo-upscale yet still Walmart-esque" vibe. Maybe because it is how naturally items from The North Face are paired with Uggs!

Muffy - so funny that you mention Uggs. Through clicking on a series of links, I somehow found myself on a messageboard (frequented by high schoolers, I believe) debating the elements of real prep. One kid said something about the girls at his school being SO preppy - because they pair miniskirts and Uggs. Fortunately at least one person pointed out that this is not preppy, but the poster was adamant - a Ralph Lauren polo, pearls, a ribbon belt, a miniskirt, and Uggs are the epitome of prepdom.

I really do kind of feel for these younger kids trying to carve out a preppy look. Even "true preps" at the top boarding schools are not immune to the consumer culture which exists today. There have always been trends, but today everyone is bombarded by many more brands than ever existed before, by constant advertising, and endless reality TV shows. The traditional preppy items are harder and harder to come by. And, I believe that even smart girls feel that they need to look
"sexy" at all times. I think so-called "mall prep" is becoming intermingled with "real" prep, even in "authentic" preppy environments. I'm not sure that the "real" prep aesthetic is ever coming back as a widespread aesthetic, even in small prep pockets of the country. (This is my experience having worked at Exeter for several years.)

Thank you Cranky Yankee!

Is Nautica preppy brand, by the way? some of them say yes, some others no. Do you have any idea on this, please?

Anonymous said...

I noticed in my recent Patagonia catalogue that all of the items were imports, mostly from China, Mexico and Vietnam.

To Anonymous 10:56am: A couple of years ago, I used reciprocal privileges to spend a few nights at a club in Mayfair. When I asked them about the dress code for my daughter, they gave a general response, but specifically said, "No Uggs!" There's one answer for the struggling 'preps' message board.

Ordered mine 2 weeks ago & was able to pick it up at "Bink's Outfitters" (no joke) this weekend. Its an excellent garment & great color choice.

As of this writing, Patagonia has this item available at 50% off online during their winter clearance as the color, Shamrock Green, is discontinued. It'll likely be easy to get at a discount, either from Patagonia or elsewhere, until supply runs out.
I got mine this week and have been wearing it for three days straight. I love it!
