Essex, Connecticut and KJP

We took a day trip to Essex, Connecticut today to see some spring KJP.
A Very Good Box

Kiel and Sarah took a break from their dying yarn, sewing, and shipping marathon.

I was able to see the new Triton Knot and the Turk's Head Sailing Bracelets.
While he arrived wearing his one-of-a-kind bracelet, he did not leave with it.

We started off to lunch...

...but took a quick detour into J. Alden Clothiers...
J. Alden and The Black Seal belong on CR's List!

...a lovely clothing store for men and women.

Essex is Cecil's town and nothing happens without him knowing it.  He stopped in to say hello.
With Leather Man/Eliza B./Austin Jeffers' Legendary Owner Cecil Lyon

The J.Alden Store Lab, Winston (with Cecil's Brit Bag)
James D'Alessio, the Charming J. Alden Owner

The Black Seal was packed so we then headed over to The Gris.
The Historic Griswold Inn

After lunch, Kiel spent some time with a few of his fans, all of whom were wearing his bracelets.

I don't know all the details, but Kiel gave them the bracelet off of his wrist.
And he posed for some pictures.

After a great afternoon, we bid farewell to Sarah and Kiel.

Essex is the perfect place for you. If you can even be half the legend Cecil is you will be very successful. He is not only a legend in business, but one of the nicest people on the planet.

What a lovely outing, Muffy. I wonder if there's something worth recommending from the Griswold menu.

KJP is great in my book. I got a bracelet for my daughter for her birthday from him and was so impressed by the quality of the bracelet and the adorable package as well.
I agree that you all are perfect for Essex. Charming town and people.

Growing up sailing in CT, we wove/tied our own turk's head bracelets on our wrists, of course without fasteners. They would stay on until they were gross at the end of the summer, then had to be cut off.
Although KJP bracelets are pretty, I'd posit that ours were more "authentic", whatever that means, and much less expensive!

I love your blog. Where did you get the khakis you have on in the pictures? They look and fit fabulous!

@Tim - As I am sure you already know, one goes to the Gris for the atmosphere as opposed to the food! Having said that, the food was perfectly adequate.

@Anonymous 9:39 - The pants are from J.McLaughlin (see entry here) and I could not be more pleased with them.

Marveling at how you others I know, can go without socks !?- the cold wind wraps around my ankles!

I am between sizes in the J. McLaughlin pants and the Vineyard Vines cords just stretched and stretched. Do you happen to know the maker of Sarah's pants?

@Anonymous 10:14 - Sarah's pants are from J. Crew. I think the warmth from the sun balanced the cold wind from the water!

I just found your blog. We lived in Guilford for several years before moving back to my husband's home city in the Southwest. I loved visiting Essex and Chester so much. Thanks for taking me back!

Muffy,
Hope you didn't have the chowder at the Griswold Inn:-) Essex I could live there!

@J. Mosby - Thinking of you, I avoided the chowder when ordering! I could live there too.

Lovely images as always. Are those railroad cars a museum display? I wonder what their provenance is...New Haven RR, perhaps?

Muffy Aldrich said...

@John - Thank you, John. We stopped very briefly here.

How refreshing it is that a designer would take his bracelet off and give it away. A simple deed that shows really wonderful stewardship. And Muffy, I couldn't enjoy your blog more!

Muffy,

Please don't distract KJP and SV anymore. I just ordered my Triton bracelet and it is back-ordered to March 1st. Make sure they KEEP WORKING so I can get my bracelet!

Thank you for a wonderful post. I enjoy reading your blog. By the way, I really like Sarah's loafers. Do you know where she got them from?

Muffy Aldrich said...

@Anonymous 8:37 - Thank you! I know that they are from Alden Shoes, but I do not know from where she got them.

I love the KJP bracelets, but I think I love the packaging just as much! Some may say that the packaging is a frivolity, and what matters is the quality of the actual item, and in the end, that's true of course. But I think attractive packaging/signage is very important. That doesn't have to mean expensive or complicated... simple brown paper tied with raffia is beautiful. A good exterior can make all the difference to drawing in customers. It's true that some of the best restaurants with simple, authentic food are hole-in-the-wall places known through word of mouth, and a KJP bracelet sold in a plastic sandwich bag would be exactly the same, but when growing a brand, the packaging is important.

Hi Muffffffffy,

Google Translate didn't help much, but here are a nice collection of pictures from a Korean blog: http://blog.naver.com/PostView.nhn?blogId=renton1006&logNo=80153614074.

@Anonymous 11:31 - It is a Ralph Lauren lambswool cable crewneck that I bought about six years ago. I have yet to find another like it.
