Preppy Trivia Question: What was the first store to carry Vera Bradley and Vineyard Vines?

I had asked this trivia question:
Q: What was the first store in the country to carry Vera Bradley?  It was also the first store to carry Vineyard Vines.

Thank you to everyone who responded.  Here is the answer:
A: The Fligors of Edgartown.

Responses of Murray's Toggery Shop in Edgartown are geospatially correct anyway.  Murray's occupied The Fligors' building from about 2001 to 2007 (Murray's originally had opened their Vineyard store 32 years ago in Vineyard Haven, before moving to Edgartown when their lease was up).

Carol Fligor confirmed that their store had been the first to carry these two brands.

I have no idea, especially since the companies were started (and are headquartered) in different regions. I am interested to learn the answer!

Disappointed when this outpost of Murray's closed. The shop that opened in its place doesn't give me the same feeling. The real fun is the "outlet" in Nantucket, with piled stacks of who-knows-what. Saw a few sets of buckle back swim trunks that looked to be 30 years old.

I'd think it would be Murray's

I woud be shocked to learn that they're the same store since Indiana is a long way from New England. Looking forward to the answer!

Well, that pen and ink is the old Murray's on North Water St. in Edgartown. I don't know it for a fact, but it wouldn't surprise me if this were true.

I believe it was Murray's. Corner store next to CB Starks's in Edgartown. Fligor's children store was underneath. I still have my VV bow tie with MV signs, although none the worse for years of wear.

Murray's is not the answer we are looking for....

Having lived in Rowayton, I think that is a drawing of the Darien Sports Shop, so that's my guess, but not out of any retail expertise! I do know from an Indiana friend that Vera Bradley was started in Fort Wayne by two very hard working women from that city.

I'm going with Darien Sport Shop... those look a lot like the windows I have to avoid being drawn in by on my way to the library!

Fligor's. I didn't realize that the store was the same upstairs as well as down.

Off the subject, I have been wearing barbour waxed beaufort jacket for many years, but I recently stopped wearing it because it is too heavy compared to other winter jackets. I happened to see you wearing barbour liddesdale quilted jacket. I heard somewhere you prefer to wear men's size small. What size of liddesdale do you wear? You know it runs really big right?

Muffy Aldrich said...

@Anonymous 10:09 - Yes, I do know it runs big, which is why I use the size small Liddesdale(s) to wear over heavier sweaters. I also have a Navy Barbour Eskdale, which has a trimmer, but not too trim, cut to wear over a single layer or when I don't need so much coat.
