Many years ago a friend of mine was attending the War College and invited me to attend the Marine Corps Ball. Unfortunately, his father had a stroke a few days before the event and my plans to attend and visit were cancelled. I’ve always wanted to visit the area. Maybe one day I will.

My step son teaches at the War College. We will be traveling there in May to celebrate his retirement from the Navy. What a lovely venue!
Thank you for sharing these pictures. I went to the Surface Warfare School there in 1999. Newport is beautiful, and I'm fortunate to have spent a few glorious months (summer and early fall) in New England.

I do not know about the War College, but if you ever get another invite to Ball, you should go. My husband is a retired Marine (Ooh Rah) and we still go every year. I think because of the times we live in, I find the Ball especially touching. To see the young (so young) Marines after they have been over seas, dancing and laughing, feeling that they can (and have!) conquer the world... It brings tears to my eyes just typing it. I do not think that I have ever seen any greater bond of brotherhood than the Marines.
The impressively polished brass cannon remind me of the story about the man whose job it was polishing the old brass cannon on the courthouse square. Even those his cannon was the shiniest around, he was one day fired due to budget cuts. He told his wife, "Don't worry; we have some money saved. We'll buy an old cannon and go into business for ourselves."
Sounds like Mr Aldrich delivered some interesting remarks about gaming as a training tool. A far cry from the amusing lectures Yusha Auchincloss delivered at the NWC...
Did you know that they trained WW2 PT boat crews in that area! JFK as most people I would hope know, skippered the ill fated PT-109! Two DVD rentals "PT-109" with the late Cliff Robertson, and " They Were Expendable" starring John Wayne, Robert Montgomery, and Donna Reed. A pearl necklace never looked so good when worn by Donna Reed!
My husband is a graduate of the Naval War Collge and also of Salve Regina University in Newport, RI. We've lived in beautiful Newport twice during my husbands Naval career. Our children were young during those times, so I didn't feel like I explored Newport and the surrounding areas as much as I wanted to. I have made up for it in recent years, though! My husband occasionally teaches and participates in Wargaming theater at the NWC and I accompany him every chance I get! We spent a lovely week up there in October.The weather was still lovely...husband taught during the day, and I walked, toured, and shopped...did the entire Cliff Walk and took many pictures. Thank you for sharing this post. Thinking of Newport brings back fond memories.

One more thing....that deck at the O'Club will come alive in another month. The most dramatic and beautiful sunsets go right along with happy hour drinks and Lobster Thursday's!

We always enjoy being in Newport. And with Officer Candidate School there now, it makes you wonder where the years have gone when you meet all the newly commissioned blood.
I have fond memories of attending an academic conference at the Naval War College several years ago.
