Dispatch from my Father (1964): The World's Fair, New York

Forty eight years ago today, my father took these pictures of The World's Fair.  In more ways than I can list they represent the antithesis of The Daily Prep, but I enjoyed looking through them, even as a cautionary tale, and thought others might as well.

Absolutely amazing B & W photos, Muffy. Your father was a talented photographer with a great eye for composition and back then, with much less technology at hand, photographers needed to know what they were doing. These pictures prove that your Dad did.

Ah but it was fun to go to as a 12 year old amazed at all the sights, but especially in love with Belgian Waffles.

Delightful images. On the one hand, I can see where those sleek postwar aesthetics can seem somewhat soulless and antithetical to your ethos. But on the other, there's something rather comforting about them. They represent a departed age when America built things and had a can-do attitude. Of course, I may just be saying that because I love the period automobiles.

My family and I went to the New York World's Fair. We drove cross country in our brand new Chevy convertible. Since I was quite small I don't remember a lot other than the world's globe, and getting lost.

Our high school class of 1964 enjoyed visiting The World's Fair that year. We came away with special memories of that trip and time in our lives. We were young
17 and 18 year olds, now in our mid-sixties who will never
forget the 1964 World's Fair.

I remember it - whether we just drove by and talked about it, or went, I do not know. Very nice photos.

I went and I was 6.It was very exciting. My mother got beautiful Korean silk and made a dress and I remember loving to play with the scraps.I think we were taken because my paternal grandmother got to go to the Chicago World's Fair and that was a rather amazing thing to do for a Mn girl.I have an adorable pin from that one that had been hers.
I hope that Americans can actually rebuild our manufacturing and actually make instead of just take.

@Marie: What a coincidence! I was 12 as well and was just thinking as I was looking at Muffy's pictures that I remember eating Belgian waffles for the first time! My sister and I were terrified on top of the GM Tower which swayed slightly in the wind.

My father was covering the Fair (as a young news producer) and was at the opening when one of my sisters was born.

Wonderful photos (as usual)!

I was there! I was four, but I have lots of wonderful memories. Had my picture taken in front of the globe, as did everyone. Thanks for the neat photos.

I grew up in NY in the 70s and saw the remnants of the Fair often. At an early age I formed the opinion that since the Fair the wrong ideas were winning; little since has swayed that notion.
