This is the time of year when I most miss the farmer's markets and farm stands. And although there are an increasing number of winter markets, almost all of our food now comes from the supermarket. One thing we have most mornings, after I make the muffins, is a blended fruit drink.
In a blender I put:
- A banana (or two if they are small);
- Two big scoops of (organic) whole milk yogurt - plain or vanilla - from a long handled cooking spoon;
- A whole bag (8. oz) of frozen blueberries and a half bag each of raspberries and strawberries; and finally
- Enough orange juice to fill the blender.

That looks splendid.
Inspiration-looks like it will be a nice side with a fresh cranberry muffin.
Amazing coincidence, we do the same and as recently as tonight replacing yogurt with almond milk and orange juice, sometimes, with grapefruit juice.
What muffins are you referring to?
@Kate - Each morning I make organic whole wheat muffins with either bananas and raspberries; bananas and blueberries; or pumpkin with honey.
I make the same drink, but also include cinnamon and a little wheat germ or ground flax seed.
What kind of blender do you use or recommend? Frozen berries can be a challenge for some blenders. -- Rod
Antioxidant heaven! Looks wonderful.
I make muffins often myself. I recently switched to whole wheat pastry flour instead of the ww all purpose flour...my muffins are so much better (lighter) now. Which do you use?
If you care about your heart, make that light yogurt.
That sounds delicious, might have to try that recipe. I don't know why I never thought to put yogurt in them, I just freeze all of my fruit and put milk in. I make a banana/strawberry blend and have found just a dash of vanilla brings out the flavor of the fruit even more. Now I'm hungry!
Dutch Uncle, I think you are a bit behind the current research. Whole foods are finally being recognized for their complete nutritional packages. Why even Dr. Oz says that drinking skim milk is akin to eating simple carbohydrates. The fat slows down the absorption of the natural (and any added) sugars.
Can NOT wait to try this.
Here are a couple of variations - one I make for my daughter and me each morning, the other I make for my wife (who loves bananas and OJ).
1. 1/3 bag of Harvest Berries, two tablespoons of raw almond butter, two tablespoons of whole milk plain yogurt, organic unsweetened coconut milk, and a scoop of a whey protein powder made from organic pasture fed cow's milk. Blended.
2. 1/3 bag of Harvest Berries, banana, orange juice, pomegranate juice, two tablespoons of whole milk plain yogurt, and the whey protein powder. Blend.
Yum.
Thanks for sharing the recipe!

When my sons were young and participating in sports and other kinds of outside activities, I kept frozen bananas for quick snacks and smoothies. Still use organic frozen fruits instead of ice for full flavor. Just for info, I use a VitaMix now but started years ago with a Waring blender then a Kitchenaid. All work well. Good way to slip fresh veggies in with some fruit.
Dear Muffy,
Recipe for muffins, please.xo Bunny Fleming
That smoothie looks wonderful! Smoothies are so versatile and a great way to "hide" healthy things that some people, children, etc., wouldn't normally eat. They are also very filling. --Holly in PA
Secret ingredient I add: a big handful of fresh spinach. After blending it disappears completely, leaving no taste, color, or texture.

I have the same thing every morning for one, minus the muffin, and have been for a few years. I add freshly ground flaxseed. Sometimes I add fresh pineapple or whatever fresh fruit I have on hand. I’m considering adding green things to it since I have a Vitamix now.

That looks yummy!!! Thanks for sharing the recipe.
Looks great. I'm partial to the Green Monster smoothie. Keeps ya happy and full for hours.
Bob Gall: Thank you for sharing your recipes too, sounds wonderful.
Muffy: I think we are in need of that muffin recipe along with the smoothie recipe that you've included here.
Dear Muffy, Your blended fruit drink looks delicious. Lately we've started making our own yogurt (in a slow-cooker)and are looking for more ways to use our homemade bounty. Thanks for the inspiration.
That looks so good...
It seems like frozen fruits and vegetables are making a bit of a comeback- I've seen two articles recently about how they are good, if overlooked, options. When I was pregnant I was a little paranoid about eating food from other countries (there was an orange juice scare at the time) and I became more interested in frozen options. It's actually pretty shocking where most of our food comes from once you start paying attention. I recently went to the grocery store and could only find garlic from China! But that's obviously getting off topic.
You forgot the most important step....Add rum.
Lately I've been combining frozen strawberries, blueberries, and vanilla soy milk. It's delicious! I use a Blendtec blender I bought at Costco last year. Also, great idea on using canning jars as glasses. We need some new glasses, and I just realized we had some canning jars in the pantry. Perfect timing! Great info on this site!
